Washington Residents Have More Booze-Buying Options, But Are Paying More For It
Until now, buying liquor in Washington state had meant you needed to go to a state-operated store. But that monopoly has now ended after residents voted to open up liquor sales to a wide range of retailers. Unfortunately, this now means that some folks are now paying a lot more to get tipsy. [More]

Did Sears AC Installers Break Window, Or Ignore Cracked Pane?
Rona, ladylike, didn’t tell us her age, but she is a senior citizen. As for many Americans, Sears has always just been where she went when there was an appliance to buy. She and her husband ordered up two air conditioners from Sears.com last month, and Sears contracted some local installers in New Jersey to put them in the windows. After the second installation appointment, she discovered that the window was cracked. One of two things had happened: either the installers noticed that the window was cracked and put an air conditioner in anyway, or they’re the ones who did it, then hoped that no one would notice. Target Hikes Price Ten Cents, Brags About It In Sale Flyer
Maybe the price of these lice kits is just up a bit due to supply and demand. Or maybe there’s some other perfectly logical reason why the product was featured in a sale flyer….even though, as George notes, the price has been hiked ten cents. [More]

Big Corn Still Believes We Are All So Very Confused About HFCS
Yesterday, the FDA concluded its 20-month review of a petition by the Corn Refiners Association to change the name of high fructose corn syrup to “corn sugar,” with a pretty solid “no.” Not surprisingly, the CRA says regulators have done you, the American consumer, a disservice by denying the petition. 20 Lawsuits From Across U.S. Say Tropicana's "Natural" Claim Is Pulp Fiction
Back in January, we reported on a lawsuit from a California woman against Tropicana, claiming that the juice makers shouldn’t be marketing its products as “natural,” as extensive processing changes its “essential nature.” Now a slew of around 20 lawsuits from across our fair nation have popped up to chime in, claiming the company adds chemically engineered “flavor packs” to the juice. Shuttered Best Buy Puts Illinois Town $200K Deeper Into Debt
The impact of Best Buy’s years of over-expansion of its bricks-and-mortar stores and increasing competition from online retailers is being felt all over the country as the electronics chain closes dozens of stores. And for one town in Illinois, the loss of its local Best Buy translates into a $200,000 budget shortfall. [More]

More Adventures In Advanced Anti-Capitalism With Sears
Sears doesn’t want Nat’s business. They don’t want my business. They don’t want anyone’s business. They may continue to exist as a commercial entity, but that’s because they’re one of two things: an advanced anti-capitalist prank, or a massive real estate holding company that continues running stores out of a sense of nostalgia while they wait for the market to pick back up. But they don’t want to actually sell anyone anything, as Nat learned when he tried to order a camera that only appeared to be in stock. Anywhere. [More]

Sears Calls The Cops On 76-Year-Old Trying To Get Someone To Pick Up Her Faulty Lawn Mower
What’s a 76-year-old woman to do when Sears sends her a faulty lawnmower, schedules a time to pick it up and then doesn’t, and then refuses to refund her money until it gets around to taking back said mower, which will then be outside the 30-day-refund window? She marches in to have a strong word with store employees, who then call the cops. [More]

Long-Running Mouse Infestation May Shut Down N.Y. Walmart
Recent state inspections of a Monticello, N.Y. Walmart have the mundane violations you’d see in any food facility’s inspection: dusty fans, lettuce cross-contamination, and coolers slightly warmer than they should be. Then there’s all of the food and other merchandise they’ve had to throw out after it was “defiled by rodents.” The state keeps coming back and reporting “thousands” of mouse droppings and evidence of rodents all over the store…and a few decaying corpses while they’re at it. The reports of mice go back to September 2011. [More]

Burning Down Home Depot Will Not Help Save Your Friend's Hardware Store
We do enjoy hearing stories about friends who go the extra mile to help each other out. There is also something to be said for helping out a local business in favor of a national retail chain. However, it’s probably not in anyone’s best interest to try to burn the bigger store to the ground. [More]

Our Nation's Brightest Minds Tackling The Problem Of Uncooperative Ketchup Bottles
Thank goodness there are super smart people out there at our nation’s finest universities. Otherwise we’d be stuck with these darn ketchup bottles that refuse to give up the last bits of ketchup, and that would just be unacceptable. Hurray for genius engineers! [More]
