There’s the one time you realize too late that you’re in the wrong lane/don’t have your E-ZPass or otherwise fail to pay a toll as you should, and then there’s blowing through tolls 500 times before the police catch up with you.
Police in New Jersey say that a 55-year-old woman has been beating the $15 toll for the Holland Tunnel repeatedly, reports The Jersey Journal.
Officers attempted to stop the woman near the Holland Tunnel early on Wednesday morning after they discovered that she owed more than $16,000 in unpaid tolls and fees, a Port Authority spokesman said.
But police say she didn’t stop for them, either, and instead drove through the toll plaza… without paying, yet again. Another officer stopped her on the other side of the plaza, however, and she was charged with theft of services for skipping more than 500 tolls, as well as obstruction of justice.
She’s just one of a few who have recently gotten tangled up with the law for trying to beat the $15 toll to the Tunnel and other tolls in the area, the Journal notes: on July 7, a 34-year-old man was found to have $37,000 in tolls and fees that he hadn’t paid; the next day, another man was arrested at the Goethals Bridge with more than $78,000 in tolls and fees on several accounts; and on July 10, police arrested a driver at the Tunnel after they said he tried to skip the toll by using a retractable license plate to avoid a ticket.
