Apparently What The 2012 Olympic Games Needs Is The World's Largest McDonald's
Nothing says athletes in peak physical condition like a Big Mac and large fries, right? As such, McDonald’s is building the world’s largest McDonald’s restaurant in London’s Olympic Park for the 2012 Olympics. No other brand name food will be sold at the Olympic Park.
The new ginormous feather in McD’s cap will be a two-story cathedral-like restaurant with room for 1,500 customers, says the Associated Press (via the Christian Science Monitor). That’s just one of its prime spots for the Olympics — there will be a separate McDonald’s within the athletes’ village as well as three others in the Park.
Of course, it probably won’t be the athletes chowing down on fast food before heading off to compete in the biggest events of their lives. A British doctor’s group is more upset about the fatty message the Olympics are sending with McDonald’s as a sponsor. They want McDonald’s to restrict its advertising during the Olympic Games, as well as fellow sponsors Coca-Cola and Heineken.
“It’s very sad that an event that celebrates the very best of athletic achievements should be sponsored by companies contributing to the obesity problem and unhealthy habits,” said Terence Stephenson, a spokesman for the Academy of Royal Medical Colleges. About 25% of Britons are obese, according to the report.
Money is money, however, and Olympic organizers are defending their business decisions.
“Sponsors provide a huge amount of the funding required to stage the games,” said a spokesman for the organizing committee in a statement. “Without our partners such as McDonald’s, the games simply wouldn’t happen.”
