Cooking Ingredients To Substitute When You're Missing Stuff
If you’re cooking and missing an ingredient, you don’t necessarily need to run off to the store to get it. You might have enough stuff laying around to concoct a suitable replacement, saving you the hassle of having to stop or scrap your meal.
My Thirty Spot offers suggestions for replacing cooking ingredients on the fly.
Here are a few of them:
* Butter. Vegetable shortening may suffice if you’re baking. If you need melted butter, try oil instead.
* Baking powder. To replace a teaspoon, try 1/3 teaspoon of baking soda and 1/2 tsp. of cream of tartar.
* Corn syrup. A cup of granulated sugar mixed with 1/4 cup of water can stand in for a cup of corn syrup. Granulated sugar can also fill in for honey.
* Sour cream. Plain yogurt is a suitable replacement.
