Trying To Buy Snacks With Fake Money Will Get You 80 Years In Jail

Put that Monopoly money away! A man who tried to use a counterfeit $20 bill to buy snacks at a movie theater has been sentenced to 80 years in jail for his crime.

DallasNews.com says the man plunked down the fake cash to pay for his two hot dogs, popcorn and two sodas at a movie theater, and was then arrested. Cops say they found $120 more in phony money on him at the time, and he was a “career criminal.”

Jurors deliberated for three hours over the case, and were apparently convinced by the prosecutors that the 48-year-old man, who had other theft charges pending against him, really needed some time in the slammer to think about what he’d done.

Before his 2009 stolen snack attempt, the man was found with ATVs not belonging to him, and then with some lawnmowers he’d lifted in 2010. Prosecutors also pointed out past bank fraud charges and the fact that he is a felon in possession of a firearm. He’ll be eligible for parole after 15 years in prison.

So you know, pay for your stuff with real money and don’t steal lawnmowers.
