Yesterday, we reported on some confusion at The Gap. The sign for its Feed USA campaign, which donates $5 from the sale of certain bags to a school lunch program, clearly states “Made in the U.S.A.,” while the label on the bag beneath the sign states “Made In China.” Today, the retailer has reached out to Consumerist to try to clarify the matter.

“We regret any misunderstanding,” a rep for The Gap tells Consumerist, adding that the Feed USA Canvas Tote bag and the Bandana Bag are actually both made here in the good old U S of A. “However, the FEED USA Denim Bucket bags are made in China, and should not have been connected to the made in the USA signs…. We apologize for any inaccurate messaging.”

That may make some sense, but there is nothing on the sign to indicate that only some of the bags are made domestically. Even if the made-in-china bag wasn’t intended to be placed directly under or next to that signage, it still carries the Feed USA logo. So it’s not unreasonable to think that customers might buy the China-made bag thinking it’s domestically manufactured.
