The whole point of a parking brake is to keep your car from rolling away. That’s why Toyota is recalling 340,000 Toyota Prius vehicles with parking brakes that might not work properly.
Toyota announced Wednesday that it would recall 340,000 model year 2016 to 2017 Prius sedans — 92,000 in North America — that contain parking brakes that could become inoperative.
According to the company, if the parking brake cable disengaged unexpectedly, the brakes can stop working properly. As a result, if a car is left in any gear other than park, the vehicle can start rolling away, increasing the risk of a crash and injuries.
CBS News reports that Toyota acknowledged receiving reports of crashes, injuries and deaths, but the carmaker declined to elaborate on those incidents.
Owners of affected vehicles will be notified by Toyota starting in November, and dealers will add clips on the top of the brake cable dust boots to prevent the cable from becoming inoperative. Customers will not be charged for the repair.
