T-Mobile CEO John Legere Compares AT&T And Verizon To Rapists, Apologizes
Last night, T-Mobile announced two cool new programs to entice potential subscribers: streaming music won’t count against customers’ data caps, and a test-drive program so people considering ditching their current carrier can give T-Mobile a try. Those are great, but one passing remark of Legere’s during his presentation drew some negative attention earlier today. (Warning – rape reference and F-bomb.)
It’s common knowledge that you probably shouldn’t bring anyone with delicate ears to an event where Legere is speaking, but this remark stood out. No one even blinks when Legere refers to his competitors as “greedy bastards” anymore, but this drew some negative attention. While discussing favorite targets Verizon Wireless and AT&T, he said:
“These high-and-mighty duopolists that are raping you for every penny you have…if they could do something nice for you, they would. The fuckers hate you.”
The second insult in there isn’t all that unusual for Legere, but referring to competitors as even metaphorical rapists? That’s offensive. The Verge compiled Legere’s most off-the-wall remarks into a video, which is where Business Insider spotted the rape quote. Legere apologized on Twitter, noting his famous lack of a language filter.
Here’s the video: to state the obvious, there’s some language that is not safe for most workplaces there. The “rape” quote is around the 1:10 mark.
