Newsflash: A store’s name is not always meant to be taken literally. That’s news to one man who claims he was just abiding by the name of a Massachusetts retailer, Finders Keepers. By his reasoning, he found stuff he wanted on the store’s porch, sitting out there for anyone, and he kept it. Cops and the store’s owner disagree with his logic.

Cops tell WCBV.com that the man was caught on surveillance video taking a grill from the porch of the thrift shop, and the suspect doesn’t disagree.

“I grabbed the box,” he said. “It was a fire pit, something like that. It turned into a grill, and I took it home.”

And that wasn’t exactly the first time — but he thought stuff was free. Because stores stay in business by handing out free items…?

“I just grabbed one. I thought it was there for the taking,” he added of another “find.” “The sign did say ‘Finders Keepers.’ So I took that DVD player, took it home. A couple of weeks later, the stuff is still there on the porch, so I’m thinking to myself, ‘Finders Keepers. They probably just put stuff out there for people to take.'”

The owner isn’t onboard with his thinking — and hey, he could’ve gone inside the store and ask someone and he never had.

“I don’t know of any stores where there’s free stuff,” she said. “It would be nice if there were. I’d be there on a regular basis myself.”
