Kroger Joins Ranks Of Supermarkets Who Won't Sell "Pink Slime"

More than a week after clarifying which of its ground beef products do and do not contain the ammonia-treated beef trimmings known by two wildly different names — “lean finely textured beef” or “pink slime” — Kroger, the country’s largest grocery store chain, has decided to nix the controversial filler altogether.

In a statement reported by Cincinnati’s Business Courier, Kroger explains:

Kroger listens to our customers carefully to provide the high quality products they want at the great prices they deserve. Our customers have expressed their concerns that the use of lean finely textured beef – while fully approved by the USDA for safety and quality – is something they do not want in their ground beef. We highly value customer feedback, and the recent flood of news stories has diminished their confidence in the product. As a result, Kroger will no longer purchase ground beef containing lean finely textured beef.

This announcement comes quick on the heels of a similar one by Kroger competitor Safeway.

Supervalu, Food Lion and Stop & Shop have also announced they will stop selling slimed burger meat. Publix, HEB, Whole Foods and Costco say they weren’t selling the stuff in the first place.

The ABC News report that made pink slime a household term claimed that 70% of ground beef sold at supermarkets contained the processed beef. The USDA scientist who came up with the unflattering nickname for the product believes that consumers are being deceived into buying edible but otherwise useless filler.
