Report: Apple May Phase Out Older iPods

As Apple prepares to unveil the iPhone 5 next week, it also may soon bring down the hammer on the long-beloved but now largely obsolete iPod Shuffle and iPod Classic.

Citing an unnamed source, The Unofficial Apple Weblog reports the older models could be phased out, leaving the iPod Touch and the iPod Nano to carry the brand’s torch. Among the reasons the older iPods may be put out to pasture are the Classic’s outdated hard drive model and the Shuffle’s lack of a screen.

The streamlining could refer to a “product transition” Apple referred to at a recent earnings call.
