Could Adult Industry HIV Scare Lead To Shortage Of New Porn?

An internet search of almost any random phrase will eventually turn up some sort of X-rated content. One could argue that this would signify no shortage of pornography available online. And yet porn fans continue to want more. Unfortunately, a number of the folks who fornicate on camera have had to take a breather this week after one adult actor has reportedly tested positive for HIV.

Several production companies have shut down production for the time being until the actor in question (whose name and gender have not been confirmed) can be re-tested and all of that person’s onscreen partners can be identified and tested.

Though porn sets require talent to provide documentation of recent (within the last 30 days) HIV tests, some authorities in California believe that condom use should be mandatory in porn films. Some actors and actresses already have condom-only policies, but one producer tells ABC News the lack of condoms in X-rated fare isn’t because the stars are careless; it’s what the market wants:

If the market would accept condom-positive movies, that’s what we would all be making. The fact is consumers don’t want that… The market will always trump regulation… If you make it so California-based productions cannot compete in the market, you’ll just drive production out of the state.

With or without condoms, it could be a while before the shuttered studios are back up and running, cranking out the movies that people love to watch but almost never admit to watching.
