Lawsuit Claims 70-Year-Old Woman Illegally Downloaded Porn
“Grandma, what are you doing on the Internet? Oh, downloading porn illegally?” Yeah, that scenario doesn’t seem too likely, but nonetheless, a 70-year-old woman is being told to pay up in a settlement pushed by a Chicago law firm, claiming she and others pirated porn.
The woman, who wishes to remain anonymous, is a retired widow in San Francisco, who spends her days doing volunteer work, reports The San Francisco Chronicle. In April, she and other Jane and John Does were sued by a law firm that has been filing similar cases around the U.S.
They’ve been pushing the defendants to pay up out of court for a few thousand dollars, suggesting in letters that the amount of the settlement is less than what they’d pay attorneys to fight the charges. They also suggest that not paying could result in their names being published, and urge defendants to pay $3,400 quickly by credit card.
This grandma Jane says she has never downloaded porn, much less used BitTorrent, and can’t afford an attorney. But she’s ready to fight, because as she says, “It smacks of extortion.” She also thinks someone else used her unsecured WiFi connection to access the porn.
Jane said she’ll go to trial without an attorney if necessary and “throw herself on the mercy of the court.”
“I’d say to the judge, ‘I have no idea how this happened,’ ” she said. “If Sony can get hacked, if the Pentagon can get hacked, my goodness, what chance does an individual have?”
She adds that several young men live next door to her. And we all know how young men are about their porn!
