Duncan Hines Pulls "Hip Hop Cupcakes" Video Over Blackface Allegations
Duncan Hines has managed to stick its foot deep into the hornet’s nest with a YouTube video for its Amazing Glazes product that features “hip hop” cupcakes that some say resemble minstrels in blackface.
Wrote one blogger on Womanist Musings:
Do I really need to break down why Blackface cupcakes are racist? I sincerely hope this commercial is fake, because if not, it represents a direct attack on Black people.
After being roundly ridiculed for the video, Duncan Hines has taken down the clip off YouTube. However, thanks to the folks at Eater, it still exists on the internet as a reminder of how misguided a marketing campaign can be.
I’m still befuddled as to how Duncan Hines thinks the music in the commercial is even vaguely related to hip hop.
