The folks behind an ongoing construction project aimed at overhauling LaGuardia Airport are promising to organize things a bit better, after traffic gridlock forced some passengers to leave their taxis and walk into the airport on foot, dragging their luggage along with them.

Over the last few weeks, a bottleneck caused by a closed entrance ramp to the airport has turned a trip to the airport into a headache for many travelers, CBS New York reports, and it happened again on Monday: epic gridlock prompted folks to hoof it in order to make their flights.

“People were double parking their cars and getting out, leaving their cars, and walking into the airport. It was kind of like at the end of the Civil War, when the troops are like straggling back home,” a man who was dropping off his niece for a flight told CBS New York. He says one elderly passenger almost passed out trying to get to the terminal.

The director of the $5.3-billion project to build a new airport at the old airport said they’ll do a better job from this point on to make sure such gridlock doesn’t happen again.

“We know we’ve had some bad days, particularly yesterday. We acknowledge that was a very bad day. we have all hands on deck working on it,” Rich Smyth said on Tuesday.

Still, anyone flying out of LaGuardia should expect some delays, and make sure to arrive earlier than they might usually. Or just avoid the place entirely until construction is complete.
