Walmart Responds To Amazon Prime Day By Offering Free Shipping For All Orders
On the eve of Amazon’s second annual Prime Day sale, Walmart is once again trying to play spoiler. The nation’s largest retailer announced this morning that it is dropping shipping fees for all online orders this week.
Walmart announced the new deal with a video on its website Monday advertising a limited-time “free shipping with no minimum purchase” promotion.
Typically Walmart imposes a $50 minimum purchase for free shipping on online orders.
While the video provides little in the way of details on the promotion, Reuters reports that it will run until Friday, July 15.
“We believe saving money every day is better than just one, and that all customers should save, not only some,” Walmart said in a statement to Reuters.
In addition to advertising Free Shipping with no minimum purchase on its site, Walmart also points out that it will “dare to compare,” stating all products are priced “at or lower than Amazon’s.”
The retailer says it will also offer discounts on a number of products — like TVs and other electronics — during the free shipping week. It’s unclear how long the discounts will last. We’ve reached out to Walmart for more details on the promotions, and will update this post when we hear back.
The limited-time free shipping and product discount promotions come weeks after Walmart launched a 30-day free trial of its $49/year Shipping Pass service, its answer to Amazon’s two-day free shipping Prime program.
While Shipping Pass does’t offer the extras of Amazon Prime like streaming video, it does give shoppers of the retailer Prime-like benefits for half the price.
