IKEA Adding Vegan Meatlessballs To Store Restaurant Menus

Lovers of foodballs that are not made of meat, rejoice: After shutting out vegetarians from the IKEA meatball club, the Swedish furniture giant says it’ll be introducing vegan meatless meatballs, or just vegan balls, if you will (and I will) this spring.

A British animal-rights group called Viva! (via GrubStreet) had the news confirmed by IKEA’s global Sustainability and Health Manager, who said in a statement that the veggie balls will hit stores in April only in restaurants at first, but will later be available for take-home sales:

“IKEA wants to offer healthy food choices that are delicious, sustainable and affordable for the many people, based on the IKEA Swedish identity. IKEA Food is currently developing the food range to provide options that meet the many different preferences of our customers. One of the exciting new products is a Veggie ball which will be launched in our stores from April and onwards. The veggie ball does not have any animal content and is therefore also suitable for vegans.”

Here in the U.S., PETA had also campaigned for completely meatless, dairyless and eggless balls, garnering about 25,000 signatures on a petition.

Lingon berries and balls for everyone!

Vegan ‘meatballs’ soon on the menu at IKEA – thanks to you! [Viva!]
