GrubHub And Seamless To Form Food Delivery Supercompany
GrubHub and Seamless Web are two of the biggest players in the growing online food-ordering industry, catering to those of us who would rather not deal with looking up menus then going through the ritual of reciting our orders over the phone. Today, the two companies announced their intent to merge and save people the hassle of having to toggle between the two sites when they can’t decide what to order.
According to a statement from GrubHub HQ (the GrubHub Hub?), the merged company will cover more 20,000 restaurants in 500-ish cities (though it doesn’t clarify if all of those 20,000 eateries actually deliver online orders; some restaurants require you to pick your order up, while some are merely menu listings with no ordering capability).
In addition to the larger restaurant network, the companies say the merger will allow them to improve the technology involved in the online-ordering process. I just want GrubHub to make it so I occasionally win a hand of Yummy Rummy, because I’m truly tired of picking a card and getting a cute YouTube video.
“We are excited to combine the strengths of these two dynamic organizations in an industry that is rapidly gaining traction. We believe the merger will enhance the products we are able to offer both our diners and restaurants,” said Matt Maloney, GrubHub co-founder and CEO. He will remain as CEO after the merger. Seamless CEO Jonathan Zabusky will become president of the merged entity, which has yet to be given a name.
The merger will still require regulatory review, so don’t go deleting bookmarks anytime soon.
