EA Triples Original Payouts In Settlement Of Football Games Class-Action Suit
If you bought an EA football game — Madden NFL, NCAA Football, or Arena Football — between 2005 and 2012, here’s some good news. Not only are you due a few bucks thanks to a class-action settlement with the reigning two-time Worst Company In America champ, but the dollar amount of the individual payouts to affected consumers have been tripled.
So people in the U.S. who purchased a game for PS2, Xbox (not Xbox 360), Nintendo GameCube or for Windows will now receive payments of $20.37, three times the original number of $6.79.
If you bought these games for PS3, Wii, or Xbox 360, the award has jumped from $1.95 to $5.85.
However, it’s possible the final amounts sent out to affected consumers could be lower as the total payout is capped at $27 million.
The amount per claimant was increased because fewer people had made a claim than originally expected. By raising the amount, the court all but guarantees that the most amount of money will be refunded to consumers.
The deadline to file your claim — which can be done over at EAsportslitigation.com — has been extended to May 15.
The lawsuit had alleged that EA ”engaged in unlawful and anti-competitive agreements that nearly doubled the price of its popular game, Madden NFL,” as well as claiming that the licensing deals with the NFL, NCAA and Arena Football “drove competition out of the market and prevented new competitors from entering.”
