Sorry, Scottish iPhone Users, Siri Doesn't Understand You & Has Never Seen 'Braveheart'
Siri, the voice-activated personal assistant on the iPhone 4S, knows to chide you gently when you swear at her, and she can handle complicated questions about the meaning of life and whether love is real. But faced with a thick Scottish burr, Siri fumbles.
The L.A. Times reports on numerous Scottish users who, even though their phones are set to “English (United Kingdom)”, can’t get through to Siri clearly.
One example cited, spoken in a Scottish brogue: “What’s the weather like today?” Siri’s reply? Best to repeat what she thought she heard to clarify. “What’s available in Labor Day?” Nope! And the Scots don’t even have what we call Labor Day.
Even though many have trouble with the tough accent, plenty of frat boys cite Braveheart as their favorite movie of ALL TIME, which means that even they must’ve understand enough of it (right?).
Apple says the more customers use Siri, it’ll adapt and hopefully, understand more of what you’re trying to tell her. However, many Scots are still having trouble and have given up on voice searches, frustrated with Siri’s inability to adjust.
Back to the old typing route for you, if Siri canna understand ye, and forget about asking Sirii for help finding the Loch Ness monster.
Here’s one amusing example of Siri’s Scottish fail:
