Google Places Desktop App On Chopping Block, Gadgets Look To Be Next
If you use Google Desktop or Gadgets in your daily workflow, it’s time to start looking around for some replacements. Desktop, which has allowed users to search for files on their computers since 2004, will no longer be downloadable Sept. 14. Google will also stop supporting the app via downloadable updates that fix glitches.
Computerworld reports Google is also killing off application programming interface (API) gadgets and plug-ins. The downsizing moves continue a trend for the company, which previously announced it would shut down Google Labs, a proving ground for apps, as well as other little-used services, including Google Wave and PowerMeter.
