Vaccine-Resistant Bird Flu Takes Flight
Avian flu won’t seem to go away, and there’s a particularly nasty, vaccine-resistant strain of the virus popping up in China and Vietnam. The Food and Agriculture Organization says the virus poses “unpredictable risks to human health.”
MedPage Today reports it’s yet to be determined whether or not this strain of the H5N1 bird flu will affect humans or cause havoc globally. Neither the FAO nor the World Health Organization has reported a case of human infection with the vaccine-resistant strain this year.
Egypt and Cambodia have reported recent human infections of the virus. Since 2003, the WHO says the virus has infected 565 humans and caused 331 deaths.
