America, please welcome the world’s smallest Walmart. It opened last week on the University of Arkansas campus in Fayetteville. Of course, the concept of “small” is relative when it comes to Walmarts: the new store is about 3,500 square feet of retail space, and replaces the former campus health center pharmacy.

The mini-Walmart will have a full-service pharmacy, as well as the general merchandise you’d find in a drugstore in a college town. If the store succeeds, it might be a harbinger of things to come in the rest of the country. Advertising Age reports that petite, drugstore-sized Walmarts would be easier to get past zoning boards in large cities that are currently Walmart-free. New York City, for example.

I look forward to an ever-expanding proliferation of smaller and smaller Walmarts, until each of us has a miniature Walmart in our own homes. Like the Starbucks under Stephen Colbert’s desk.
