Chef Tries, Succeeds In Making Better Meat Munchkin Than Dunkin' Donuts

Earlier this month, Dunkin’ Donuts launched a new sausage-in-dough-with-maple-syrup product they call “sausage pancake bites,” but which many have just taken to calling “meat munchkins.” But one NYC food blogger, unhappy with the results of his taste test, challenged a real restaurant chef to go DD one better.

When Seth from TheYoungAndHungry.com first tasted the Dunkin’ Donuts sausage pancake whatever, the results weren’t pretty. “Not only did they paint Seth’s hands with grease,” read a review on the site, “but the sausage part was ice cold and there was an unidentifiable ‘gooey substance’ which is exactly how we envision food poisoning to look.”

And so, he challenged the Joe Dobias of JoeDoe’s in Manhattan to see if he make something that delivers on the promise of a pancake-wrapped sausage. (See the video below).

Joe started with quality sausage and then coated it with some thick pancake batter before popping it into the deep fryer. And then, instead of maple syrup he went for wildflower honey.

The result: “Joe’s sausage pancake balls easily fall into the category of Good. Light and fluffy, the treats had the consistency of funnel cake… When it comes down to it, you really can’t compare homemade pork sausage to whatever it is that Dunkin’ Donuts used in their balls, but we’ll tell you this: there certainly wasn’t any unidentifiable gooey stuff this time.”

Joe even told the site he’s considering adding the dish to his menu.
