Regulators from the Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources zealously enforce a 1941 law that prohibits retailers from selling milk below cost. The law was originally intended to help level the playing the field between small stores and large chains, but now serves to keep the price of milk artificially high. Just last week, state regulators asked the Market Basket supermarket chain why they were selling milk for only $2.59 per gallon. From the Boston Globe:

David McLean, operations manager for the Tewksbury-based chain, said the company would be adjusting its price upward to $2.89 a gallon and may go even higher this week when wholesale prices are scheduled to rise.

A Massachusetts jury has awarded a former Walmart employee almost $2 million dollars after finding that the company underpaid her, then fired her as a result of gender discrimination, according to Reuters.

“We respect the jury’s decision but we feel that it did not reflect the facts in the case, so we are studying the decision and have not ruled out an appeal,” said Wal-Mart spokesman John Simley, in a phone interview on Wednesday. “Ms. Haddad was dismissed because of numerous violations of company policy.”

The Falls River Major Crimes Division has cleared Taco Bell in the case of the spiked taco. “Police reported “an opiate” was found in the half-eaten taco a Fall River man said made him sick after eating at the Taco Bell.” Unfortunately for local Fall River lawyers, it seems like the dude spiked his own taco. After the half-eaten morsel was analyzed at the state crime lab, the opiates in the taco were confirmed, but the alleged taco victim, “Phillip Daggett, 27, has declined to cooperate in the investigation and has refused to speak with a detective assigned to the department’s Major Crimes Division.”
