Prepaid credit cards offer millions of unbanked Americans an alternative to traditional banking. With the number of prepaid card options growing each year, card providers look for new ways to set themselves apart. That’s where name recognition comes into play. We’re not talking about Visa or MasterCard, we’re talking about celebrity like the Kardashians or Justin Bieber. A celebrity attaching his or her name to a prepaid card serves as a great marketing opportunity, but are the cards really any help to consumers? Probably not, seeing as most of the cards are riddled with fees.
Here at Consumerist HQ we’re a bit leery when it comes to pre-paid debit cards. They always seem to come with hidden fees that can pop up and punish users for trying to access their own money. And when you throw in a celebrity like say, the Kardashians or in the latest news, Justin Bieber, the potential for the younger set to be exposed to this fee-laden world grows.
Justin Bieber’s fans believe a lot of things about the teen singer, mainly that it’s okay to call themselves “Beliebers.” But one man is not a fan of the Biebs, claiming that not only did he have the nerve to use his stolen credit card , but that he bought a penis enlargement with it. Teen pop sensation/hair farm Justin Bieber received a chrome-plated Fisker Karma as an 18th birthday gift from his manager, and has been caught a few times in the kind of traffic violations you’d expect from an 18-year-old with a very fast luxury vehicle. Leonardo DiCaprio apparently owns one, too. The vehicle is a nice status symbol for rich dudes and dudettes, we guess, but our colleagues down the highway at Consumer Reports Cars weren’t as fond of it. They gave it a failing grade. The Karma’s first impression–breaking down almost as soon as it arrived at the test facility–probably didn’t help.
Despite not knowing how to use her phone for anything other than making calls, Michelle’s mother somehow racked up a $1500 bill for 2,888 MB worth of “music or video streaming.” It certainly wasn’t the latest Justin Bieber video on loop. Michelle is trying to negotiate with Verizon but all they’ve done so far is offer a 50% discount. That’s still about $600 more than Michelle wants to pay.

But in a recessionary move, this year retailers are making attendees pay a price if they wanted the privilege of attending their promotions and getting celebrity autographs. At Dolce & Gabbana, kids were told that they could buy a $35 tube of lipgloss to get Justin Bieber’s autograph, but then he only popped down the stairs to sing one cover song. Then he sped back upstairs without signing anything.
