Trader Joe’s Hummus Recalled For Possible Listeria Contamination Image courtesy of FDA
After the recall of a wide array of Sabra hummus products and sandwiches and veggie platters that used that hummus, another brand of the tasty chickpea dip has been recalled for possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. Two varieties of Trader Joe’s hummus distributed in eight states have been recalled because they may also be affected.
Did the hummus come from the same factory, or is there a contaminated ingredient that both companies have in common? Listeria bacteria was found in a sample of finished hummus, and products made on the same equipment have been recalled as a precaution. Is it related to the bigger Sabra recall? We don’t know yet, but what we do know is that you should check your fridge for these varieties:
Mediterranean Hummus: Look for a “use by” date before Dec. 15.
White Bean & Basil Hummus: Look for a “use by” date before Dec. 15.
If you have any questions about the products, the recall, or the tubs of hummus in your own refrigerator, contact the supplier, Bakkavor Foods, at 855-312-7504.
Listeriosis is a potentially fatal foodborne illness: some healthy people might have no symptoms at all, but it can turn into life-threatening meningitis in children, the elderly, and people with compromised immune systems. Early symptoms to watch for are fever, gastrointestinal symptoms, and muscle aches.
It also poses a particular risk for pregnant women, since the bacteria can be passed to the fetus through their bloodstream, causing miscarriage or stillbirth. Symptoms of illness during pregnancy are subtle, and can include fever, fatigue, and muscle aches.
