If you celebrate Easter, what are your plans this year? According to a survey by the National Retail Federation and Prosper Insights and Analytics, Americans will spend an average of $146 per person on Easter this year for a total of $17.3 billion. That includes the expenses of baskets full of candy, egg hunts, clothing, gifts, festive meals at home or at a restaurant, and flowers.

Gifts? Yes, survey participants estimated that they would be spending a total of $2.7 billion on gifts for the holiday, while they predict spending $2.4 billion on candy. (The survey didn’t ask how much of that candy would be purchased at a discount the day after Easter.)

Shoppers also anticipated spending about $3 billion on clothing, presumably dressing-up clothes for the holiday. The biggest expense will be non-candy food, though, including ingredients for home-cooked meals and at restaurants. It would also include marshmallow egg nog and other holiday confections that sort of resemble food.

The survey didn’t give results for how many participants don’t celebrate Easter, or already bought all of their Easter candy back around the winter solstice. Someone must be doing that, right?
