Starbucks Sausage, Egg & Cheese Muffin Recalled For Listeria Concerns

A company that makes Starbucks’ pre-packaged Sausage, Egg, and Cheddar Cheese on English Muffin has issued a recalled for the breakfast sandwich over concerns that they may be contaminated with Listeria.

The sandwich company, Progressive Gourmet Inc. of Wilmington, MA, announced through the FDA that there is a “potential” for these Starbucks products to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes after routine testing by Progressive turned up the presence of the pathogen on a contact surface within the production facility.

While the recalled sandwiches — which come in a 6-ounce, clear plastic package marked with “Best Before: 07-AUG-2016” on the top — were distributed to warehouses in Maryland, North Carolina, Texas and Louisiana, only 250 Starbucks stores in Arkansas, Texas, and Oklahoma appear to have received the potentially tainted product. All affected stores have removed the recalled sandwiches.

Listeria monocytogenes can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Symptoms include high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea. Listeria infection can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this product.

Anyone who one of these recalled sandwiches is being urged to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions may contact the company at 1-800-224-7630 (9:00 am-5:00 pm Monday through Friday EST).
