Schnucks Grocery Stores Says 2.4M Credit & Debit Cards Affected In Security Breach

Aww shucks, Schnuck's!

Aww shucks, Schnuck’s!

If you’ve shopped at one of Schnuck Market’s 100 grocery stores in Missouri, Indiana or Iowa, you might want to take a close look at your credit cards and bank account: The chain says about 2.4 million credit and debit cards were potentially compromised due to a security breach.

About 79 stores were involved in the snafu, which happened sometime between December 2012 and March 2013.

According to the company, only card numbers and expiration dates were accessed and not other personal information like names or addresses, reports KTVI News. Which leaves just enough info for a thief to buy stuff on a victim’s dime, of course.

“Over the years, technology has helped us deliver superior customer service, but it also introduces risks that we have actively worked to manage through compliance audits, encryption technology and various other security measures,” said Schnucks Chairman and CEO Scott Schnuck.

The company says it’s been working with banks to identify cards that could’ve been compromised, so the financial institutions involved can try to secure those accounts. Schnucks is warning customers that neither it nor the police department will call, text or email asking for personal information, so don’t fall prey to any such communications.
