Sheba Says It’ll Only Use Sustainably-Sourced Seafood In Cat Entrees By End Of 2013
When we heard that Sheba is promising to use only sustainably-sourced seafood in its cat food entrees, of course we pictured a fleet of feline fishermen, sharpening their claws and licking their whiskered chops. That’s not exactly how it’ll be, but the brand has pledged to be good to the environment going forward.
Sheba is owned by Mars, which makes other brands like Pedigree, Whiskas, Cesar, Royal Canin and Greenies and said it’d move the entire company toward sustainable seafood by 2020. This is the first step, to be completed by the end of 2013, and only includes Sheba entrees.
Which begs the question: Are there cat appetizers out there that we just haven’t heard about? Because those ostensibly wouldn’t be included in the sustainable gang, and neither would treats. If those are a thing. Anyway!
“We understand the importance of our ingredient-sourcing choices and how they can make a positive impact on the environment,” Tina Garcia, marketing services director for Mars Petcare US said in a statement via the Chicago Tribune. “By using responsibly-sourced fish for our Sheba entrees, we have made it easy for pet owners to shop with confidence and to reward the most environmentally responsible fishing practices.”
In order to ensure the fish it puts in cat food is on the up-and-up, Mars will work with the recommendations set down by the Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Seafood Watch. It lists fish by region and highlights the “best choices” for specific areas, as well as “good alternatives” if the desired fish isn’t available for sustainable reasons.
No need to take Fuzzy McFluffpants to the lake this season to catch his own trout. Unless you really want to, that is.
