Burger King Promises To Stop Using Caged Pigs & Hens
Burger King says they’re going cage-free and proud to be, promising to stop using cramped chicken and pig cages. It says it’ll use 100% cage-free eggs in all U.S. restaurants by 2017 and buy pork from suppliers who show proof that they’re ending the use of gestation crates for breeding sows.
As Reuters notes, today’s announcement by Burger King is the latest in a slew of promises by fast food chains to satisfy consumers who have become more interested in where their food comes from.
The Humane Society and the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) have been campaigning for years for fast food restaurants to change their ways and offer food that’s more humanely processed. Gestation crates keep pigs in a tiny cage while the sow’s piglets are raised.
Burger King has 7,200 restaurants in the U.S., about half the amount as McDonald’s. In February, McDonald’s vowed to phase out gestation crates as well. Wendy’s, which is No. 2 in America after snagging the spot from Burger King, also followed suit in March.
However, Burger King is the first to announce a complete transition toward cage-free eggs in the U.S.
