One of the country’s largest homebuilders stands accused of running afoul of Clean Water Act requirements at 278 sites in 14 states and must shell out a $625,000 fine. The government accuses the Ryland Group of leaking pollutants into stormwater and messing up procedures involving pollution prevention, inspections and permits.

According to the Florida Independent, the settlement requires Ryland to obtain proper permits, complete pollution prevention plans and inspections for all its sites and document any problems it finds. The company also has to train managers and contractors and submit compliance reports to the Environmental Protection Agency, which says that in forcing Ryland to change its ways will reduce the company’s sediment discharges in stormwater runoff by 261 million pounds.
