The TSA Thinks You Might Be Hiding Weapons In Your Big Hair

Here’s a warning to the big-haired travelers of the world: Your voluminous ‘do might merit a second round of security screening the next time you’re traveling through the airport.

This is what a woman flying from Atlanta to Dallas says she recently discovered, when TSA screeners decided to do a post-checkpoint pat down of her hair.

“I just heard these voices saying, ‘Hey you, hey you, ma’am, stop. Stop — the lady with the hair, you,” the woman tells KXAS-TV. She says she was stopped on her way to the gate and told not to go any farther until her hair had been given a once-over for things that might go “boom.”

“And so she started patting my hair, and I was in tears at that point,” says the woman. “And she was digging in my scalp… I was humiliated. I was confused.”

She says she complained to a TSA supervisor at the airport and received an apology, but the TSA’s statement to KXAS defends the screeners’ actions:

TSA’s screening procedures are designed to ensure the security of the traveling public… Additional screening may be required for clothing, headwear or hair where prohibited items could be hidden. This passenger left the checkpoint prior to the completion of the screening process. She was offered but refused private screening.

But the traveler says that in 20 years of wearing her hair naturally, she’s never once required any sort of extra screening.
