JCPenney Removes "Too Pretty To Do Homework" Sweatshirt
After a jcpenney sweatshirt that said, “I’m too pretty to do my homework so my brother has to do it for me,” caused an uproar among bloggers, the retailer has removed the garment from their website and issued an apology.
People flocked to jcpenney’s Facebook wall to voice their opinion about the sweatshirt
and a Change.org petition to jcpenney’s CEO to remove it garnered 1,627 signatures. Blogs for the TODAY show, ABC, and the Village Voice covered the story, along with a slew of mommy and women’s interest blogs.
jcpenney corporate communications wrote Consumerist following our post this morning about the sweatshirt:
jcpenney is committed to being America’s destination for great style and great value for the whole family. We agree that the “Too pretty” t-shirt does not deliver an appropriate message, and we have immediately discontinued its sale. Our merchandise is intended to appeal to a broad customer base, not to offend them. We would like to apologize to our customers and are taking action to ensure that we continue to uphold the integrity of our merchandise that they have come to expect.
jcpenney elaborated further to the Village Voice, saying, “We are not happy about the shirt! We’re looking into it right now, to find out how it happened. It was only online, not available in stores, and we have removed it from the site.”
That’s all well and good, but how about an apology for the heinous graphic design? It looks like something that fell out an 80’s nightmare.
