While Amazon now offers both a subscription streaming video selection and pay-per-view movies, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings says that is a road his company has no plans on going down right now.
In a new interview with Business Insider, Hastings says it’s “Very, very unlikely” that Netflix will get into the pay-per-view market.
“We’re focused on the subscription. Unlimited for a flat fee. That simple proposition,” he says. “[F]or us, it’s about brand clarity, and that we stand for $7.99 per month for unlimited streaming. That’s what we really want to focus on and we think that’s the optimal strategy. Rather than try to get into every possible thing that our subscribers also want, like should we sell DVDs? Should we offer various equipment? Etc etc.”
Hastings also shot down the idea of a tiered pricing plan that would give users access to different kinds of content depending on how much they pay each month.
