Broadband Internet Keeps Cable Companies Dominant Despite TV Losses
Cable companies are hemorrhaging subscribers, but the businesses are still sitting pretty thanks to the trump card of broadband internet access.
FierceCable reports Comcast dazzled investors by posting fourth quarter earning results that said it dropped 135,000 basic cable subscribers, which was great news for investors, considering previous estimates pegged the projected the losses would be 199,000. Time Warner and Cablevision also lost thousands of subscribers.
The companies are adding so many internet subscribers, however, that overall business is booming. A research group found cable companies benefited from a net gain of 2.3 million subscribers in 2010.
