We know, we know, most of the value here is in coming to the customer’s house and making sure that everything works.     I can actually see this as being a reasonable offer if you’re someone who really needs it. Like if you are a parent who has trouble getting around, and you don’t want your kids fiddling around behind the TV stand. I mean, it’s not like they require you to buy this in-home setup, but it’s a nice option for people who aren’t me to have.

      I agree. Just because someone is purchasing a video game system it doesn’t mean that they feel comfortable enough to set it up on their network. And $99 doesn’t sound too unreasonable when you consider it’s a house-call that, transportation included, might could reasonably take at least an hour.

    To be fair the cost is as much a reality as it is a deterrence. “Do I really need help installing this Printer, or am I just being lazy and shy about it?” You get a lot of customers assuming you will come out to their house for a crisp $20 so they can enjoy the privilege of not having to read a quickstart guide, consisting primarily of 4 steps. 5 if you include unboxing the unit, but even that is supposed to be done before the agent arrives. Though to be fair, even what should be normal device setups can still wind up being a PITA. Things don’t always go according to plan and not everybody knows what steps to take to troubleshoot. When however you tell them it’s $100, you’d be shocked (or not) at how many customers suddenly cease being “computer illiterate” (their own words).

    Theres also the big ugly that unlike your nephew, an Agent is licensed and certified, and a warranty is included on the services performed, just in case something stops working. If you give your best friend a 6-pack to “fix” your computer and he deletes your wedding photos, you really don’t have any recourse.

    It’s a service type I’d usually reserve for customers with certain needs or uncertain factors. A good example is customers who don’t understand their own wireless connections or had it set up by an unavailable third party. Another good reason being customers who may need more one on one time showing them how their new shiny works without the distraction of the sales floor, and frankly some things like consoles, TVs and Printers, you can’t really sit down with a customer and have a walkthrough with them. Tablets and Laptops, sure. But even then some things can be best done in the home, like offering to set up a customer’s router or PC with a child-friendly DNS.

    In my opinion, the price also comes with the brand. Geek Squad has a lot more recognition and clout (and accountability – the BBB and sites like this) than the guy who operates out of his garage fixing broken PS3s and 360s, and only leaves his business card on craigslist and at the desk of the local Radio Shack. Granted, I had such a person re-solder a car key once and it worked great, but I’d have preferred to pay a bit more money to have it done at a proper business location, and not drive to someone’s garage at the back of a neighborhood that had a street gang patrolling the front avenue.
