No Tween Girl Clothes Are "Sexy"
I don't think it's ever appropriate to market clothes to tween girls using the term "sexy." Manufacturer "PrettySinful" has a different opinion, as seen in these "sexy" tights sold on Amazon, accompanied by a picture of a prepubescent girl. Perhaps the picture is in error because the rest of the clothier's offerings are along the lines of crotchless bodystockings and various "do-me" adult party costumes. In any event, it's gross and should be fixed.

Wooderson: That's what I love about these high school girls, man. I get older, they stay the same age.

Nothing beats dressing your daughter up like a whore. It's good training for when they get tossed around frat parties like a party favor. And what's with the XL size?
"Product Description
Little girls love to wear these tights, and they come in both red and black and yellow and black stripes!. Girls Stripe Sexy Tights Hosiery Leg Wear."
Check out the "Customers Who Viewed This Item Also Viewed" list, too. It's great! Men's Mustang watch, a Jamie Lynn video, a cordless pencil vibrator and Idiot's Guide to Evangelical Christianity!
Um, wow. I think I'm going to spend the next few minutes convincing myself that the girl in that ad is actually 21 years old and just has an enormous head. That way I don't have to spend the rest of my day in a state of total disgust over this stupid product.
On a related note, I've just decided that, if I ever have a daughter, I'm going to make copious use of the phrase "You're not leaving the house in that, missy" any time she's got on less than a full snow suit. I might even harumph.
@Rhayader: Rhayader: Learn to push back against legitimate complaints about the over-sexualization of children with something -slightly- more sophisticated than "shut up", OK?
@Rhayader: Yeah, cause little girls need to learn young that their first duty in life is to be sexy!
And who better to teach them than Wall Street!
As the mom of a daughter (who's just a toddler now) this kind of stuff disgusts me, and makes me nervous about what battles I'll have to fight in the coming years.
It's also the reason my husband has been in the garage at night welding bars for her windows and fashioning chastity belts.
Oh, he's also making sure his shotgun is in good working order. He knows what horny teenage boys are like. He still acts like one occasionally!
@Oranges w/ Cheese: Excellent suggestion! In fact, new rule: Mesh backpacks only. Also, I've decided that I'm definitely going to harumph.
Uhhh ... perhaps they're just being more overt than most, but sexualizing children is nothing new for the clothing industry. How many junior high and high school girls have I seen walking around in sweatpants with words plastered over their asses? Why would words be across their rear ends, if not to draw eyes there?
@captadam: Just because the companies continue to do it doesn't mean we don't need to shout loudly that the practice is disgusting.
so you have a 10 year old who hears the word "sexy" used all around them in reference to beautiful women and you don't expect them to want "sexy" clothes? If you ask me this is a good plan- convince 10 year olds "sexy" means red striped tights and see how long you can keep them fooled.
Classic marketing- take a buzz word kids want and make it meaningless.
@ThunderSaid: Might harumph? You *must* harumph. Otherwise your daughter will just wear the slut-wear under the snowsuit and change at the bus stop. The harumph shows you mean business.
@Rhayader: Please don't presume to tell parents what we should or should not react to until you yourself are a parent. Seriously.
@CSedarka: I don't want to fan the flames here, but the response is simple: if parents don't buy these clothes for kids too young to have their own income, then they won't wear them.
The only reason a "sexy" range for tweens is even made to begin with is because someone is likely to buy them. The responsibility for that purchase lies with the parents, who supply the income for kids that young. if something's inappropriate, don't buy it. If they demand it anyway, parent the kids instead of giving in. It's not easy, but parenting's not meant to be a cake walk.
@RandomHookup: It's funny, pretty much because we just keep hoping that no one wants to have sex with babies, and whenever we hear anything even remotely suggesting the sexual abuse of infants, my personal reaction is LALALALALALALALA I CAN'T HEAR YOU EVER.
As the parent of a six-year-old girl and even though I'm in marketing and advertising, I can't even fathom the line of thinking that leads to products like this. Someone needs to remind them what happened when A&F tried to market a line of thongs for the 7 to 12 year-old set.
Kids get the messages enough as it is. We don't need companies reinforcing them.
@aphexbr: Er, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, folks, but while there are and will likely always be some totally clueless parents in the world, like as not the people buying this stuff aren't parents. I would stop there, but I've learned that these things need to be spelled out: Pedos might like their victims to dress the part.
@AD8BC: Thanks, Calvin Klein. You thought it was risque and cutting edge to sexualize children. It's just effin' gross.
@alexawesome: "I would stop there, but I've learned that these things need to be spelled out: Pedos might like their victims to dress the part. "
Not all grandparents are pedophiles, some are just clueless.
@hollygirl: I think that sounds cute. Some people have different ideas/senses of humor, and making a fuss in the store probably didn't help your POV any.
I don't know a simpler concept than "if you don't want it, don't buy it". And it would be nice if PARENTS raised their kids and stopped bitching at the media for not doing it properly for them.
Having a 13 year old daughter myself, I must say that while it is disgusting for clothing companies to market things such as this, my daughter cares too much about herself to want anything like this. And always has.
Of course, there have been times on shopping trips that she wanted to buy something "slutty" and I would explain to her why she could not have it. I think it has given her a good self image because she was exposed to things like this every time we went shopping.
My daughter dresses modestly and almost never tries to get away with wearing something inappropriate, and this is because it has been explained to her WHY she should not want to dress like that instead of just bitching at the store for it.
Face it parents, companies DO NOT care about your little snowflake. And, you CANNOT make them care. If you want your child to make good decisions in life, it is your job to teach them.
And if your kid tries to dress like a slut, maybe you should blame yourself instead of everyone else. Yes kids are impressionable but if you show them the right way first, before all of the advertising gets to them, then you have a better chance at raising a good kid and not a "prostitot".
@Jessestalker: Depends on the "beautiful" women we're talking about here. If you're referencing the emaciated models, no thanks.
@paco: God, my boyfriend's 13-year-old sister showed off some of her "new underwear purchases" to me the other day (I'm 24) and I was appalled. If I were her mother, she wouldn't be touching those things with 100-ft poles.
Why else do you wear a thong then to beg for sex.. srsly.
@startertan: This comment ("It's good training for when they get tossed around frat parties like a party favor.") is over the line. I realize you're joking, but as it's very likely to cause people to respond negatively and hijack the thread, it's too inflammatory.
@Rhayader: I don't even like kids and usually end up blaming bad parenting for things and even _I_ think you're in the wrong here.
@TemporaryError: Page 4 of the list has this:
Sexy Alice in Wonderland costume for dogs
Perhaps we should also be concerned over the sexualization of our pets?
It's up to the PARENTS to instill in their children that this is wrong. Kids have chances to buy drugs and alcohol easily every day and this ad is no different. Don't spend money on this item and it will quickly go away.
What's that you say - sex sells and is everywhere on TV? Voice your opinion to the companies and vote with your dollar. Ohh, but your child loves Hanna Montana in her tight jeans with her striking sexy poses in her concerts dating a 20 yr old statutory rapist? Just say no to that whining and begging from your kids - you are in control. Parent by example. Spend time with your kids.
