Dollar General Launching Convenience Stores Called ‘DGX’
When you hear the name “Dollar General,” you think of a discount store or even a dollar store, right? The chain is apparently expanding its focus to hip urbanites who wouldn’t shop at a Dollar General… but who might seek out a sleek new DGX brand convenience store. Maybe.
The first store will open in Nashville early next year, and a smaller version will open in Raleigh later in 2017. Presumably, if the format works, you could see it in a city near you, competing with the native convenience store chains.
What we already know is that younger adults, at least, aren’t averse to shopping in dollar and dollar-ish stores and discount grocery stores, but this store is aimed at the growing market for fresh prepared food and maybe even “fill-in trips” between grocery store visits. Or grocery deliveries.
The stores would not be gas stations, but would have a selection of fresh food: basic groceries, sandwiches, and beverages. The stores will have basic pet supplies and cleaning supplies, but also some of the products that Dollar General is known for: seasonal décor, home goods, and electronics.
