Congratulations, America: We've Got The Saltiest Fast Food
You are so salty, America. Salty enough to snag the title of the world’s saltiest fast food nation! Congratulations, U.S. pizza, burgers, fried chicken, fries, tacos and more — you’re loaded up more than anywhere else on this little green and blue ball we call home.
Good.com cites a new study published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal that looked at six fast food chains in six countries and checked on their saltiness.
Burger King, Domino’s, KFC, McDonald’s, Pizza Hut, and Subway were examined in Australia, Canada, France, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the United States. And the results showed that our fast food industry was pretty consistent in delivering more salt per gram than the very salty average.
We’ve got the saltiest pizzas, and the salt levels in our “savory breakfast” offerings are way up there, too. Lest you think a nugget is a nugget is a nugget, America’s Chicken McNuggets have two and a half times more salt than their counterparts at British McDonald’s. At least our fast food salads are at the salty average.
Too much salt isn’t a good thing, but once we start down the road of salt, it’s hard to get off of it. Fast food restaurants could reduce the salt in their foods, as they’ve done in other nations where the government has convinced fast food companies to lay off the salt in their processed foods.
A Big Mac is never going to be good for you, but cutting out some of the salt could make it a little less terrible for your health.
