The man whose failed bid for the New York governorship hinged on his one simple promise, “The rent is too damn high!” could be getting evicted.

Jimmy McMillan captured national attention, though not the gubernatorial seat, with his populist catchphrase. Now he has turned it on its head, saying “the rent is too damn low.”

The New York Post reports his landlords want to evict him from his $872.96 a month rent-controlled East Village apartment, he says, so they can charge higher rents. The landlords say that it’s not his primary residence and say that he really lives in Brooklyn. In exchange for doing some maintenance work, the landlord there has let him rent the one-bedroom apartment for free since the early 80’s. McMillan says that the Brooklyn pad is just the offices for his “The Rent Is Too Damn High” party headquarters and that he really lives in the East Village.

Now it will be up to the courts to decide whether the rent is too damn high, too damn low, and if Jimmy has to go.
