Blu-ray Not Only Here To Stay, But To Dominate
Bad news for those of you who were hoping Blu-ray would become a passing fad that vanished like Betamax, LaserDisc and HD DVD. The high-definition format only continues to pick up steam as giant HDTVs continue to infiltrate households and people decide plain ‘ol DVDs are no longer good enough. High-Def Digest, which admittedly has a horse in the race, reports the Blu-ray format is thriving.
From the story:
While DVD sales are down 10 percent from last year, Blu-ray sales are up to $45 million. That’s 89.17 percent over last year’s numbers; nearly twice the amount as last year.
Blu-rays still don’t make up the bulk of sales, but they account for an impressive 16 percent. DVD revenue still sits at an impressive $236.73 million. One area of note is that the increase in Blu-ray sales didn’t make up for the decrease in DVD sales. Packaged media in general was down 2.27 percent.
I rooted against Blu-ray in its early years, hoping I wouldn’t have to replace my DVDs as I had my VHSs, but over the last few months I’ve become a Blu-ray whore. The picture and sound are just too good to pass up for movie geeks. Consumerists, have you fallen under the spell like me or managed to resist?
