Burger King To Go Trans Fat Free By The End of 2008

Burger King has finally begun the rollout of new trans fat free cooking oil, and says that the restaurant will be trans fat free by the end of 2008. From BK’s statement:

“We are delighted by the outstanding consumer response to our new oil,” said Russ Klein, president of global marketing, strategy and innovation. “In tests on over a dozen core items, consumers determined that BURGER KING

products cooked in trans fat free oil tasted the same or better than products cooked in the traditional oil. We are proud to offer a healthier oil with the same great taste.”

Hooray for fewer trans fats.

So… what are they using instead? Unless they switch to lard, butter, or coconut oil, or cook at a low temperature, then trans-fats will still be formed in ANY vegetable-based oil when used for cooking.

  2. Mom2Talavera says:

So they may be using interesterified fat from Malaysia instead. This kind is even worse than transfat; this new fat caused not only high cholesterol but also diabetes in testing.Note they aren’t telling us what kind of fat they are using. If they switched to peanut oil, or any other kind of oil, they could just name it but they don’t tell you because you can get on the internet and google’interesterified fat’ and get the info for yourself.

Check the ingredients in the food you buy BACKS
of labels and go to fast food places and see if they can tell you what kind of fat they use and
    where it comes from.

The front of labels will say ‘no trans fat’it’s true, but they aren’t telling you what IS IN it.

Seriously with headlines like this consumerist sounds shillish. Come on yall you can do better.

I will take my fries and chicken strips deepfried in normal old Lard or Canola, not any chemically engineered healthfood-nazi grease. And if these SOBs try to take away my real butter again…

  5. The Bigger Unit says:

So eating at Burger King is all like, healthy and stuff now. Finally, I can gorge on burgers and fries because they don’t cook with trans fat.

  6. royal72 says:

attention all americans, your government has now made it safe to eat fried food. you’re welcome.

  7. rosy501 says:

You go, Burger King. Still doesn’t mean I’ll eat there… those “chicken fries” are about the grossest thing I’ve ever heard of.

  8. Mariallena says:

In New York City transfats have been illegal since July 1st so I am sure they have already been serving the alternative recipes for a while.

  9. BillyShears says:

Naturally occurring trans fats are fine; the artery-clogging, heart-stopping issues are pretty much isolated to man-made trans fats.

Also, for the love of God, cooking in high-heat oils does not magically create trans fats. You may as well say that shoving an ear of corn into a blender creates high-fructose corn syrup.

    YAY Corn Syrup!
