Apple Uses Big-Handed Model To Shrink iPhone

Did the iPhone get smaller? Nope, the hand model got bigger.

Looking at the before and after side-by-side is sort of creepy.

That’s a big hand. It’s meaty, even.

Whose hand do you think it is? —MEGHANN MARCO

  1. The omnipresent hand of Ben Popken, squeezing the last bit out of that iPhone for quality customer service.

  2. bpotterr says:

What I’m wondering is: Why didn’t they think to do that in the first place?

  3. smakdphat says:

    she’s got “man-hands”.

  4. homerjay says:

Isn’t that Manhands that dated Jerry Seinfeld?

  5. bambino says:

It’s obviously the Hand of God

  6. Recury says:

Yao Ming? If that guy isn’t at least 6’6″ and 250 pounds, I would be shocked.

  7. homerjay says:

    Awwwww CRAP!!!
    Damn you, smakdphat! (shaking fist)

  8. Papercutninja says:

    Everybody PANIC?

  9. SkyeBlue says:

Is it just an optical illusion or does the one on the right look a bit shorter and WIDER than the one on the left?

What’s next? Pics with a bigger wallet to make the price look more reasonable? I can buy a Mac Mini for that price :-0

  12. B says:

I have been asked to pass along this message from the hand-model:
“I’m tired of these jokes about my giant hand. The first such incident occurred in 1956 when…”

  13. faust1200 says:

    Ho-ho-ho Green Giant.

  14. roche says:

    Duh, its Andre the Giant.

  15. alpha says:

maybe the first person just had an abnormally small hand…

    yeah I doubt it too.

  16. Uriel says:

Unfortunately, the new hand-models are a bit too “ham-fisted” and require a dialing wand to use their new iPhone, as the keypad simply cant withstand such corpulent fingers.

  17. MeOhMy says:

I’d like to see video of that guy trying to use the iPhone with those fingers.

  18. kidnextdoor says:

So…you know what they say about a guy with big hands?

  19. JRuiz47 says:

    Bravo for The Simpsons reference.

  20. mac-phisto says:

@roche: now that’s a great way to save money on a marketing campaign.

that is until the family discovers that the body’s missing.

  21. MercuryPDX says:

@kidnextdoor: He has a hard time playing with his tiny penis?

  22. dgandy says:

well it also looks like the model is holding the phone differently…in particular closer to the palm than in the original shot. I don’t doubt they used a different sized hand, but the different hand position can also exacerbate the effect.

  23. B says:

@kidnextdoor: They have a hard time finding gloves that fit?

  24. Peeved Guy says:

I don’t think the hand is that larger/smaller or the device is held differently, etc., they just Photoshoped the iPhone to look smaller.

  25. FlyRyan says:

It’s not a different sized hand. It’s stretched wider. There was a picture on digg that had all the pics overlayed after they were sized properly.

  26. nequam says:

Maybe Apple got shit from the giant community, which complained that their ads unfairly catered only to “normal” handed people.

“So easy, a giant do it?”

  27. kerry says:

Man, so many Simpsons references. Bravo!

  28. mckeb753 says:

pretty sure the “new” one is a photoshop job…that would be one meaty hand…the iPhone commercials and images in apple’s website appear to use a model with a hand somewhere between the sizes of these two…

  29. Grrrrrrr, now with two buns made of bacon. says:

Everyone needs to drive a vehicle or make phone calls, even the very tall. This was the largest phone that I could afford. Am I therefore to be made the subject of fun?

I’d just drop it in the toilet the first time I tried to make a call.

  30. ECN2 says:

The old image was not scaled properly:

  31. “Woah…”

  32. SkyeBlue says:

Does it make me have more “status” if I have cellphones that keeps getting smaller and smaller that I can use while I am drving SUV’S that keep getting bigger and bigger?

  33. LeopardSeal says:

@JRuiz47: I second that, nothing beats a good Simpsons reference.

  34. k8supergrover says:

Am I the only one who wanted it to be bigger? I hate small cell phones….oh, I am, aren’t I. Darn it!

  35. Xerloq says:

@MercuryPDX: So he’s buying the iPhone to compensate?

  36. synergy says:

I guess I’m the only one in here who hasn’t watched the Simpsons since season 2 or 3.

  37. IRSistherootofallevil says:

Apple does post the dimensions on I don’t see what the big deal is.

  38. Trai_Dep says:

(breathing a quiet sigh of relief that they didn’t choose to use a “Regular” and “XXL” size of another – closer to the waist – appendage to balance the iPhone on).

  39. savvy9999 says:

It’s Friday, queue up the Violent Femmes background music:

    Let me go ooonnn
Like a blister in the sun
    Let me go ooonnn
Big hands I know you’re the one!

  40. mcsey says:

It’s the hand of Jesus holding his phone.

  41. mikyrok says:

    Al Gore.

  42. Trai_Dep says:

It’s nice to see Lurch is still getting work besides The Addams Family residuals.

  43. InductGnosis says:

Quite frankly I am tired of this device invading all my normal tech reads. iPhone this, iPhone that. I dont care. This company, and its hordes of zombies just annoy me.
