Report: Microsoft Likely Won’t Make Another Wearable Band
Two years after Microsoft entered the wearable market with its Band fitness devices, it appears the tech company may be throwing in the towel, at least for now.
Since launching Band in 2014, Microsoft has released one update, the Band 2, but hopes of a Band 3 are dwindling, as ZDNet — citing sources close to the matter — reports the company is signaling that the end is near for the device line.
According to the sources, the company disbanded the team that was trying to get the Band to run Windows 10 — the Band 1 and 2 run on custom firmware — and has no plans to release a new device this year.
Microsoft, for its part, hasn’t confirmed that the Band 3 is dead in the water.
“We continue to invest and innovate in the Microsoft Health platform, which is open to all hardware and apps partners across Windows, iOS, and Android devices,” the company said in a statement to Microsoft. “We also continue to sell Microsoft Band 2 and remain deeply committed to supporting our customers and exploring the wearables space.”
ZDNet points out that while it’s possible the line could be on its last leg, Microsoft’s apparent commitment to the health platform could mean other devices or products in the future.
Another possible sign that Microsoft is ditching the Band is the recent discount of the latest device. The Band 2 launched in Oct. 2015 for $250. Now the device is selling for only $175, albeit for a limited time.
