Snapchat Killing Off “Local Stories” In Favor Of Live Event Feeds
If you like checking out “Local Stories” to see what other folks in your city are posting on Snapchat, well, prepare to say farewell: Snapchat is ditching that feature so the company can focus more on its live event channels.
For those unfamiliar, the Local Stories option curated videos submitted by users showing them doing everyday stuff in cities like New York and Los Angeles.
Snapchat sources tell Bloomberg, which was the first to report the news, that 15 curators who worked on that feature will be parting ways with the company. As it turns out, local stories just weren’t as popular as others, one insider explained.
“A small number of Local Story curator positions were eliminated in our Los Angeles and New York offices, as the result of changes to our Local Story Coverage,” Snapchat said in a statement. “We’re thankful for the contributions from these team members.”
The new focus is all about live moments, like holidays and major events including the Super Bowl. This way, Snapchat could make deals for content with advertisers, media companies and others to get their brands to star as one of those live moments.
