Samsung Cites 1968 Movie To Prove It Didn't Rip Off iPad
Responding to Apple’s lawsuit alleging it copied designs for the iPad and iPhone, Samsung’s lawyers have pulled out video evidence from the 1968 film 2001: A Space Odyssey. In a 1-minute clip, the lawyers imply that the iPad-style form factor predates Apple’s devices.
FOSS Patents quotes the exhibit submitted to the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California to oppose Apple’s motion for a preliminary injunction.
As with the design claimed by the D’889 Patent, the tablet disclosed in the clip has an overall rectangular shape with a dominant display screen, narrow borders, a predominately flat front surface, a flat back surface (which is evident because the tablets are lying flat on the table’s surface), and a thin form factor.
Here’s the clip:
Do you think the devices used in 2001 look enough like iPads to bolster Samsung’s case?
