GameStop Stores Ordered To Open 'Deus Ex: Human Revolution' Boxes And Remove Free Game Coupon

This news isn’t going to garner any love for perennial Worst Company In America contestant GameStop. The video game retailer’s Field Operations Manager sent out an e-mail — which has since gone public — demanding that stores open copies of the PC version of the game to remove a coupon containing a code that allows the buyer to play the game for free via the online gaming service OnLive.

Reads the e-mail:

Please immediately remove and discard the On Live coupon from all the Regular PC versions of Deus Ex: Human Revolution. Our desire is not to have this coupon go to any customers after this announcement.

ArsTechnica got a comment from a GameStop rep who confirmed that “Square Enix packed the competitor’s coupon with our DXHR product without our prior knowledge and we did pull these coupons.”

So if you want the OnLive coupon, you will not want to go to GameStop. And if you bought the game at GameStop, maybe you were lucky enough to find a store with employees who hadn’t gotten around to removing the code.
