2nd Man Dies From Eating Salmonella Contaminated Pastries
A second man has died after eating pastries from the DeFusco’s bakery in Rhode Island, the result of a salmonella outbreak that has sickened 66 and hospitalized 23, reports The Providence Journal.
The bakery is now closed. An inspection turned up several violations, including putting empty, baked pastry shells in boxes that had been used to hold raw eggs. The boxes later tested positive for salmonella, probably from an infected egg that broke.
“Although baked goods may seem an unlikely source of foodborne illness, cream and custard-filled pastries, such as zeppole or eclairs, are actually often implicated in outbreaks,” noted Food Safety News.
